Purina Lasalle University
Purina + LaSalle University

As part of Purina’s belief that pets and people are better together, we know pets can have a positive impact on students attending college by helping lower stress levels, ease anxiety, promote exercise and encourage social interactions. That’s why LaSalle University in Philadelphia, PA, has partnered with Purina since 2017. This partnership, founded on mutual passion for pet companionship, has helped create a more intentional pet-friendly campus through support of, “Pause for Paws”, a stress buster for students held each semester; “Bring Your Pet to Work Day” for employees; a pre-event for the National Dog Show each November; and generally celebrating pets on-campus. These events helped create a more pet-friendly culture, culminating in the creation of the first dog-friendly residence hall on their campus. The dog-friendly residence hall opened in the fall semester of 2019 to students and their beloved canines.

Purina’s partnership with LaSalle provided the resources to help make their first pet-friendly residence hall a safe and successful place for the pets and students. Purina’s support included providing funding for facility renovations, such as a dog run, a reimagined pet friendly public bathroom, a pet-friendly common area, and increased security measures for access to the residence hall and dog run. Additionally, Purina provided expert recommendations on the design of the residence hall, best practices for student pet ownership, and accommodations to ensure pets are happy and secure in their new home.

LaSalle and Purina recognize bringing a pet to school is a big responsibility. In light of this, LaSalle worked with Purina’s experts to create student and pet guidelines. Students work through an application process and are thoughtfully invited to live with their dog on campus after completion of this process. There are strict criteria and guidelines for careful consideration of the students, before applying, to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience. Some of these requirements include: the size and breed of the dog; vaccinations; affordability of health and maintenance costs; socialization of the dog and responsibility of managing a full course load, extracurricular activities, and pet ownership.

The success of their partnership and La Salle’s newest pet-friendly initiative inspired La Salle to introduce their first ever doggie mascot, Angus the Explorer. Angus is living in the new residence hall with his student, making appearances around campus, welcoming families and new students, and just soaking in the college experience!

St. Louis Children's Hospital
Purina + St. Louis Children’s Hospital

Time spent in a hospital is often time spent away from everything familiar and comforting. But it doesn’t have to be. St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Purina partnered to create their vision for a place where family pets could visit their hospital-bound kids. The fourth family pet center in the world opened its doors in 2016. Today the Purina Family Pet Center helps children heal.  Because being united with your best friend as you receive care can be transformative.

Petfinder
Purina + PetFinder

Adoption is something to celebrate. In 2016, PetFinder experienced the joy of placing 1.7 million cats and dogs into homes, but that’s just the beginning. Shelters across North America have 7.8 million opportunities to complete families. Only over half of those cats and dogs are welcomed into homes. It’s a gap full of possibilities. Purina and PetFinder—the largest online database of adoptable pets—aim to unite every adoptable pet with what they deserve—a future and a loving family.

Purina + URIPALS
Purina + URIPALS

Adults, children, and pets in an abusive home all need protection. But most shelters cannot take in pets, so often victims stay in order to not leave their pet behind. But it’s a choice no one should have to make. That’s why Urban Resource Institute’s People and Animals Living Safely program and Purina created a new model of domestic violence shelters that is the first of its kind.  Once in the URIPALS program, whole families—pets included—rehabilitate and start a new, safe future. As of September 2017, 74 families and 106 pets have begun a new future together. Because seeking sanctuary shouldn’t mean saying goodbye.

Rescue Bank
Purina + Rescue Bank

Navigating tragedy well takes expertise and resources. That’s why Purina relies on Rescue Bank as our partner in providing disaster relief. After Hurricane Harvey made landfall, people and pets in the affected area needed help, quickly. Devastation grew as multiple storms hit—Harvey, Irma and Maria—Purina and Rescue Bank got to work. Together we kept pets safe by feeding 210,000 pounds of food, providing 80,000 pounds of litter, donating over $50,000 and even relocating them out of harm’s way.
